Capon

The Capon program is for students enrolled in kindergarten. 
Once a week, students participate in a variety of activities that help them develop their fine and gross motor skills.  These activities are completed under the supervision of the classroom teacher and parent volunteers.
 
 

Computer Lab

Computers

All classrooms have access to the computer lab at least one day per week.  Depending on the grade level, students will have an opportunity to use instructional software, learn how to use word processing, how to conduct research on the internet, and how to create PowerPoint presentations.
 
 

English EnrichmentEnglish Enrichment Pull-Out Program
 
Schools are allocated federal funds that are to be utilized to provide resources and/or direct services to assist students whose primary language is other than English.  Our funds have been used to purchase instructional materials for every classroom teacher and to hire a retired teacher to work with our most limited English speakers to help them acquire the language skills necessary to be successful in the classroom.
 
 

English Language Learner Program

Students in grades K-6 who are identified as English learners are placed in classrooms with teachers who are certified to work with them.  Students are provided base program services in English and additional reinforcement activities to help them become fully proficient in English.
 
 
 

GATE
 
Eligible students are identified by passing the GATE test administered by Fremont Unified.  Students are provided base program services and additional extension and enrichment activities specific to their academic needs.  Students are recommended for GATE testing beginning in 3rd grade based primarily on STAR (state assessments) in mathematics and reading/language arts.
 
 

Library

The library media specialist meets with all students in grades K-6.  Each class visits the library once every other week and has the opportunity to check-out books to read.  Books checked-out by students must be returned to the library every time they visit the library.

Physical Education

The physical education teacher instructs all students in grades 1-6. Students participate in a variety of movement, physical fitness, and skill activities.  The teacher also prepares the students for the State Physical Fitness Test which is administered to all 5th grade students.
 
 
 

Special Education
Special Education
 
Niles School offers a Resource Program and a Speech and Language Development Program that provides services for students who qualify via an Individual Education Plan (IEP).  The teachers are specialists in their area and work collaboratively with the classroom teachers to provide students a comprehensive educational program.  The school psychologist is assigned to our school one day per week.  Her primary responsibility is to assess students to determine whether they qualify for special education services.
